【正文】Abstract: “Crescent Moon” is one of the classics of Chinese modern short story, it is right because of Lao She’s underlying consciously focus on the destiny of women, especially on the tragic fate of women in the old times. This paper mainly comes from the feminist perspective, analyzes the leading character in “Crescent Moon” and also puts forward some suggestions to women in the new century.
Key words: Crescent Moon; feminist perspective
“Crescent Moon” is a story of Lao She’ full-length novel “DaMing Lake”, it describes the growing-up experience of a seven-year-old little girl who has lost her father. The little girl was not able to escape her mother’s tragic destiny, from a pure little girl to a young maiden, forced into prostitution, sentenced into the jail, all her life stopped here. From the description of these two generations miserable life experience, we are supposed to have a deep thought on the fate of women in the new era under the charge of that in the old times.
The moon is a symbol of beauty, with the rhyme of the peace and quiet, but “crescent” in this novel became a symbol of loneness and misery which never completes and always been broken. At the very first, the leading character “I”do have enthusiasm for life. even though the death of her father make her have to continue go to the pawn and her mother has to be a toil all day, even with a new dad, she didn't completely devoid all the enthusiasm to the society. It’s not until at her primary school stage that she got to know what did her mother do. Right at this moment her hate as well as her understanding of social evils came about. She began to resist, but in the hopeless revolt she could not flee the fate of make a living by betraying body ultimately.
The fate of the leading character “I” in “Crescent Moon” represents all the miserable fate of women under the old system. In the dark social system, the women can not escape the ending of a tragic fate. In order to survive, they have to become the victim of old times. With his deep sympathy and pain, Lao She uncovered the destruction of beauty to people, and its fundamental purpose is to expose the darkness of the society, to trigger the reader a strong social sense of responsibility, and to think deeply about how to end this evil origin.
Cruel life and new education make the thought of the leading character, namely “I” in the novel, with the characteristics of modernity, such modern characters in the work embodied as follows: she was unwilling to get economic independence depend on men and she attempted to feed herself through her own labor. But under the dangerous environment, for her, it is without possibility and ability to stand firmly in this society. As a result, she had to compromise to the society in the form of tragic choice.
As female in the new century, we own the opportunity to receive the higher education. Our choice of living conditions, education background and employment are far superior than that in the old times. But there is no denying that the traditional concept which was accumulated for thousands of years cannot be eliminated in a short period of time, we should pay special attention to three questions in our process of growth and development: the first is to understand the multiple connotations of women independence; the second is to keep independent when faces difficulties and setbacks, the third is to train the ability of independent.
Women independent consciousness should not only include independent consciousness of economic, love, marriage, it should also include indepenDdent consciousness of mental and social status. The leading character in “Crescent moon” is mainly seeking economic independence, while as female in the new century, on the basis of economic independence, we must seek independence in all the aspects.
Through appreciating Lao She’s double vision of contemporary women fate and life in “crescent moon”, one can better understand as women, we should expand ourselves in the aspects of ability, knowledge background and intellectual factors. Never give up to pursue women independence.
